Castel Nuovo also known as Maschio Angioino (Angevin Keep) to locals, is a massive fortress constructed by French architects Pierre de Chaulnes and
Pierre d’Angicourt during the 13th Century. It is located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. From Port Napoli, you can just walk to the castel which is also adjacent to Galleria Umberto. Naples was a part of our tour to the South of Italy, this is our first stop from Rome on the way to Pompeii. At the entrance of the castel you will find a marble arch and Italian paintings. The castle
features 14th and 15th Century sculptures and frescoes as well as a civic museum
(Museo Civico).
The castel was built in 1279 when  Charles d’Anjou
(Charles I) transferred the capital of his Kindom from
Palermo to Naples. The castle was damaged after the war between the
Angevins
and the Aragonese. After the war the castel
was rebuilt by Guillermo Sagrera,  the castel now features five towers that overlook the Naples harbor. During this period also it acquired the
name of Castel Nuovo or New Castle. Castel Nuovo is also home to the
Neapolitan Society
              of Natural History.
