Bayon Temple is one of the most famous temple in Angkor Archaeological Park built in the late 12th century or early 13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII. It is the most well recognized and probably the most impressive temple in Cambodia because of the gigantic faces adorning the temple towers which are made of stones.

This temple is also intriguing because until now, the experts have not concluded yet what these faces represents or stand for. Who is being depicted by the faces is still a subject of debate among the experts on the field.
There are 216 stone faces in Bayon Temple, 54 towers of four faces each . And according to locals, from the 216 stone faces, nothing among these faces are exactly alike.

Whatever these faces in Bayon Temple represents, I know we will be able to uncover very soon. But a part of me is hoping that it will stay as it is... a mystery. Maybe there are things better left unknown.

DeleteYou can just imagine how much work went into those carvings! The details are just phenomenal! I wonder how long it took to build that and to carve all those pictures out. So awesome! I'm also very curious about what the faces represent but at the same time, like you, I want them to remain a mystery. There's just something fascinating about a mystery, don't you think? :D

ReplyDeleteNice pics! This is one of the most picturesque spot in Siem Reap. ^__^ This is also my favorite among the temples. Gusto ko nga bumalik dun. I'm only using a digicam and would like to have better pics, hehe.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, our guide had this neat trick. You will sit dun sa isang corner and then the output is that you will be nose to nose with the face. It's really cool! :)
